Before you start

A little preparation makes the first conversation more useful.

  • Write down what you want to do and your preferred timing.
  • Gather an outline of your income, regular spending, borrowing and deposit.
  • Note any changes you expect, such as a new job or a change in working hours.
  • Check your credit file. Our credit file guide explains why and how.

Ask us which documents are needed and how to send them securely. Avoid sending identity documents or bank statements through an unconfirmed channel.

Look beyond the headline rate

A lower rate does not always mean a lower overall cost.

Compare payments and fees over the same period. If a fee is added to the mortgage, it can also attract interest. Ask your adviser to explain the comparison, including any early repayment charges and the assumptions used.

Get ready for your next deal

Know what ends, when it ends and what happens afterwards.

Find your current rate end date, remaining balance and any early repayment charge. Tell your adviser if your income, household or plans have changed since the mortgage was arranged.

Compare staying with your current lender with moving to another. Allow time for any application and legal work. The available options depend on your circumstances and lender requirements.

Ask about your plans.

We can explain the next step and arrange advice for your circumstances.
